As seen on the blog: Across New Zealand (Christchurch – Hokitika)
We knew that we could arrive rather late in Christchurch in New Zealand. And didn’t fancied to re-build our bicycle at the airport late at night and then start our tour. So we were looking for a cheap place to stay, our friends in Melbourne recommended the JailHouse backpackers and youth hostel.
It is not the cheapest place to stay in Christchurch but what you get it time behind bars. Or rather the experiences of the JailHouse which is a restored in to this great little backpackers and youth hostel. Each of the rooms we stayed in, which is the old cells, are fitted with a telly and a rather soft double bed and just enough space at the side of the bed to walk past.
Hey it is a old correction facility so don’t expect big rooms. But what you get is a fully and well equipped kitchen, cinema, tv room and internet access. Every thing is very modern, well kept and clean. Shower still have that jail feel to it, though there small cubicles installed and the water is hot.
Shops are nearby and a rather good fair trade cafe just down the road called Addington coffee co-op. And buses runs right into the centre of Christchurch a short walk away.
We were allowed to store our bicycle boxes there while we toured New Zealand, you can also rent bicycles there to cruise around town on.
